Sustainability
Myer is introducing new sustainable initiatives to reduce packaging, minimise waste from landfill, promote recycling and support circular economy schemes in Myer Exclusive Brand (MEB) packaging and partnering with National Brands (NB) and Concession Brands to bring them along on the journey.
Myer’s sustainability initiatives outline its commitment at all levels of the supply chain.
Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO)
Myer is a signatory of the APCO, a not-for-profit leading the circular economy of packaging & a national regulatory framework under the National Environmental Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure (NEPM) 2011.
National Packaging Targets 2025
As a signatory of the APCO, Myer is committed to achieving the National Packaging Targets of 2025:
More information on the National Packaging Targets can be found here
Sustainable Packaging Guidelines
To facilitate organisations in achieving Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets, APCO has created a set of 10 Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs). The SPGs integrate the Principles into the right business areas, to achieve the optimal outcomes for packaging functionality.
More information on the SPGs can be found here
Myer will be conducting bi-annual packaging assessments utilising the SPG Checklist
Packaging Metrics Calculation
As a signatory to APCO, Myer must report on its packaging annually. Supplier’s will be asked to report on all MEB SKU and Business-To-Business packaging bi-annually by populating and returning the Packaging Metrics Calculation spreadsheet.
Australasian Recycling Label (ARL)
Myer will be transitioning from the traditional Mobius Loop and Written Instructions on packaging, to the ARL.
The ARL is an on-pack label that helps consumers in Australia and New Zealand to correctly recycle their household packaging. The ARL must be used in conjunction with PREP, which informs the User of the recyclability outcome and on-pack ARL artwork for each separable component packaging.
The ARL Process Document contains a complete breakdown of ARL style requirements, including additional processes and labelling options. The ARL Style Guide is a short guide that defines the design considerations for the standardised application of the ARL artwork on-pack. As per the ARL Terms and Conditions, Members are required to adhere to the design considerations stated in the ARL Style Guide and User Guide.
The Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal (PREP) is an online platform to verify if packaging is recyclable or not recyclable and underpins the Australasian Recycling Label.
The PREP Evaluation Questions document is required to be populated by each supplier on request to enable Myer to evaluate the packaging items within PREP.
Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
To align with the National Packaging Targets 2025, Myer recommends sourcing from the FSC on applicable packaging components. FSC accreditation informs the consumer that the packaging material is sourced from responsibly managed, FSC certified forests and/or includes recycled content.
More information about the FSC and their accreditation can be found here
